Bigfish presents Innovation Black featuring Jaytech and Nitrous Oxide

Jaytech and Nitrous Oxide's sets were absolutely wonderful - they dropped Inception and Walter White and everyone loved it. Everyone - except me because sadly I.Was.Not.There.

Despite that, I still created this blog entry for my love of these Anjunabeats artists. I was confident that both of these acts will surely deliver even though many, during the line up's announcement, were apprehensive and skeptical whether if the event will be a success. They were wrong - with all the kind of feedback and reaction I have been getting from friends and social media, the event was more than a success. In fact, it was tagged as one of the best events that Bigfish ever threw. 

This was my second time to have missed out on Innovation Black since 2008. I have learned to realised by now that Innovation Black is the sure fire best event of the year in terms of line up. I should know because it has been consistent that way. Looking 3 years back, it was Ferry Corsten, Alex M.O.R.P.H, Tritonal, Jerome Isma-e, and this year were Jaytech and Nitrous Oxide -- all had been a success and outdid it's Innovation White counterpart. Cream however, is a different case because I don't really pay attention much on the line up - Cream is about the costume.

Although I was not physically present last Saturday, my mind was with the community. I was also listening to my NO2 sets especially the mix he did for Anjunabeats Worldwide 04. I didn't feel that I missed out on anything because for me it was a daily thing listening to both of these artists. The only thing I may have missed, perhaps, was sharing the experience with my trance buddies. But we did catch up after the event and continued to bask in the momentum that the it created, so it was still all good.

Bigfish presents Innovation White featuring Jochen Miller, Rank 1, and Ana Criado on vocals

It was a rainy night but the show must go on. Not even a storm could stop me from seeing one of my dj/producer crushes in person -- Jochen Miller -- not mention, a closing set delivered by one of the most underrated trance acts Rank 1. So I marched on with my #TrioTagaPayong friends and reveled the night away.

When Jochen took over the decks, the crowd just went ballistic, started jumping, throwing their hands up in the air, and just losing in his heavy basslines, epic riffs, and Bigfish's fantastic laser light shows.

I did feel the crowd of Bigfish is getting younger as years go by, well that only means that my generation is ageing as well. Jochen Miller's energy was channeled by the crowd and as he drove us to edge of his infectious beats, he still manage to throw that smile that even led the girls and the boys and practically everyone else crazier. As he built, smashed, drove, and threw the crowd high up, it was time for the duo Rank 1 to take over, keep the aerial momentum and eventually land the crowd safely. Oh, and somewhere in between was Ana Criado singing. I didn't feel much of her presence really, so I don't have anything else to say. 

It was a night of redemption for the Innovation White series. I could remember the last great Innovation White was during the Above & Beyond 2010, not even Cosmic Gate or Chicane could top it but with Jochen and R1', I can say it is now back on track.

And it gets better, there was an after party at Club Haze where Jochen spinned some more. His energy is just encompassing and with all the riffs he's been doing while flashing his white-teeth smile, was just a monumental.

Bigfish presents TranceNRG featuring Dash Berlin

Never thought this opportunity would come again so soon - being that I missed the first gig of Dash Berlin in Manila last Jan '12, here he is again back in Manila for Bigfish TranceNRG as part of his Music Is Life tour.

Normally, my bff Jason is the one in-charge gathering all of Manila bloggers and press people for the mini media conf prior the event. This conf allows select invited guests, press people, and bloggers to meet, greet, and throw questions on the featured artist/s. However, the date of DB's second Manila gig also fell on a Lunar NYE which made Jason unavailable - I covered for him. I got to do first hand and be involved in the action of holding up a media conf, engaging the media folks whilst waiting for the artist, doing some leg work in performing logistics down to ensuring loot bags have the right stuff in and that they will be given to the attendees at the end of the mini conference. 

I became an instant fan of DB's music back in 2009 because of his melodic, melancholic, emo-trance tunes i.e. 'till The Sky Falls Down, Man On The Run, and the ever-anthemic Waiting. However, his recent works has become too emotional and commercial that they just lost their appeal and luster on my musical palette. But that didn't stop me from attending his gig, and better yet getting a chance to talk, ask him questions, and have a photo op with Jeff Sutorious. Yes, he is that guy with a modest height for a caucasian. Dash Berlin consists of three members and Jeff is the face and the front man of the act.

It's fun to be a girl sometimes. This is another tribute to women, and anyone, who takes effort to look beautiful. It is not easy, people! Aside from the fun part, dressing up as someone taught me a whole new perspective of things that actually helped mould the character that I am now. I have better understanding of people - that sometimes women aren't cranky because they are bitches but simply their shoes are just killing them.

I want to share with you a journey of how I got in to this whole dress-up-as-someone-for-Halloween thing. Even when I was a kid, I remember putting on my mum's shoes, using the blanket to make a dress-like outfit,  and generally using my mother's stuff. Yes people, it is an indication that a boy is a gay boy. So for mothers out there who see this sign, you should, this early point in time, start accepting you're son might be gay - and it's not a bad thing.

Don't get me wrong though, I do not want to become a girl. But sometimes it's fun putting myself in their shoes, literally - what it's like, how fun it is as well as how difficult it is, especially nowadays. 

We have friends who became inspiration to both me and Jason in dressing up. My three very good friends Ryan Pronstroller, Jethro Patalinhug, and Mike Reyes who all taught us how to nail an outfit. We learned from the best!

Fast forward to 2007, my BFF Jason Tomas shared with me his first drag on moment - hosting his company's Christmas party as Mariah Carey. He looked really funny though but it's the type of funny to make dressing like a girl fun. When I visited him in is house, we played dressed up in his room like little girls. We used his Natasha 3" heels and used other means to create a dress-like outfit. Here are some of the photos:

It was a lot of fun. There were a lot more photos but to spare me of my remaining dignity, I will not be posting them anymore.

Come 2008, we have decided to sip up some courage to dress up in public for Halloween. This photo sparked that thought:

Typically, you would think that I went for Beyoncé and Jason went for Britney. On the contrary, it was the opposite. He decided to be Beyoncé from the Destiny's Child Survivor music video whilst I tried to be Britney Spears from the ...Baby One More Time music video. Honestly, I could say we were pretty enough for first timers. But we did have a whole lotta room for improvement.

This was the year where all the Halloween parties were scattered in many days. Our first appearance was at Fiama in Jupiter. This was the Gossip Girl era that everyone dressed up like an upper-east sider school girl.

I know I'm missing the pig tails and the blonde hair but I was pretty enough. Though people were confused who I was but most of the recall was still Britney because of the knot I did on the blouse. So that kind of salvaged the look. Lesson learned #1: Recall - to gauge how recognisable your costume is.

In 2009, we both missed the preparation for Halloween due to busy schedule at work. We did not have time to prepare. But in December of that year, I have planned our company's Christmas party. As I have been commissioned to be the host, I decided to dress up a little bit. Luckily for me, we have some friends in the business whom I asked for help for the costume I wanted to wear. This was an impromptu decision just like how Jason decided to host their company's party. 

Here I was glimmering in a sequins-studded outfit by Charina Sarte. The look was inspired by Heather Graham from Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Fly-Eye Glasses was inspired by Calvin Harris. This outfit was apparently worn by Kyla in SOP before I borrowed it. That gives you a hint what dress size she is:

As we miss dressing up in public together, Jason and I decided to push to a higher level our Halloween costume. So in 2010, we researched about who we wanted to be. From where he was working at the time, his employer also owned a dress-making shop in the same building where their office is. When the time came we have decided on a peg, we went in for consultation and had out fitting. We were so excited as this is the first time we had our outfit done. Customisation is key! We decided to show our assets: Jason, abs; Marx, legs. He was a Hellcats cheerleader whilst I was a sexy lady referee. 

It also so happened that we met Renan Bautista from a couple of common friends. Never imagined this meet up witll be the start of a yearly Halloween client-MUA relationship. 

Here I was, the lady referee:

I achieved my goal that night - to look like a total girl. Although I got many references to who I was donning that night: Victoria Beckham, Vanessa Hudgens, Miss Universe 2010 Jimena Navarette of Mexico, and Penelope Cruz. Lesson Learned #2: Attitude - whatever you lack, you make it up with attichood!

After this night we were really raving with the result and was overwhelmed by the responses of both friends and people who didn't even know. This experience fired us up to don the what-was-yet-to-be-the-costume-to-beat.

As Halloween 2011 approached, we had ample time to conceptualise and prepare for the look. This point in time, people were really looking forward to who/what we will be wearing. We wouldn't want to let this people down so we squeezed our creative juices to come up with a ka-Vogue outfit. 

This time Jason decided to become one of the greatest icons there is - Wonder Woman. As for me, I was having a hard time deciding. Just my luck with timing, I got to watch the movie Black Swan for the first time. When I saw the character of Natalie Portman as the dark side of the swan princess, I immediately got butterflies in my stomach and started pointing at the screen saying, that's me alright! I will be Black Swan!

We got all pegs aligned, contacted our former couturier. We had our fitting and was truly excited. However, this brought distraught when we learned that person making our dress resigned and left the work hanging. We also thought they didn't have the right knowledge to perfect the costume. So we resorted to another couturier who specialises in making outfits for CosPlayers. That boosted our confidence they will get the outfit right. So we had another fitting and religiously followed up. 

At first, I wasn't confident with the outcome of the costume, Black Swan is a Russian ballet, therefore it needs to have a Russian-style tutu - the final product was American-style and we didn't have an ample time to re-work the costume. But I still felt good and confident that I can pull it off. Then came the make-up sesh. Renan is such a genius he did Black Swan's feather-eye make up on me in a matter of minutes. The make-up did salvage the look. The recall was perfect! 

Here I was as The Black Swan: Lesson #3: Maintenance - how manageable is it to sustain the look and feel of the get-up.

After this night, we have reached the peak of our Halloween costume hobby. We both thought this were the costumes to beat - puts the pressure for the coming years! 

The comes 2012, the pressure is really on. We were brain-storming if we can really out-do the previous year's costume. As September approaches, we were getting anxious and tensed - yes we are that serious. Our social status were on the line (LOL!). Desperation seemed to have kicked in, we were coming up with crazy concepts. The time came we needed to visit our couturier, Jason has decided to become a Hooters girl whilst I half-heartedly decided to become Akasha, Queen of the Damned - which I have been planning to go as from yesteryears. During the visit to our tailors, we were still pretty much undecided. I got Jason to actualise our former plan to dress up as Baywatch babes. He will be CJ Parker and I would be Lt. Stephanie Holden. But I didn't want to share the concept, so I pushed for Akasha. With religious follow up, I was able to get an early fitting. When all seemed in place, I didn't feel right about my costume. I was having a costume crisis as if my life depended on it. I decided to drop the Akasha concept Thursday night, just two days before the Cream Ball.

That night I dreamt of the Candyman video, not sure what it meant but it all just dawned on me that might be my inner-self sending me a message. That morning, I began checking out the video and the photos. Then there it was - butterflies in my stomach. The same feeling I got with Black Swan. At that moment too, I've decided to yield to Black Swan's legacy but promised to be sassy, sexy, and fun donning my new-found costume.

Friday lunch time, I called my couturier that they need to rush another costume and have to get it by 3PM Saturday. I did what I thought I had to do.

Being my inspiration with costumes and concepts, I saw my friend Mike Reyes online on Skype and shared with him this change. Without realising he previously shared this concept with me before. Honestly, I have never thought he would be serious to push for this concept since we were sharing so many pegs at the time we were chatting. In girl world, what I did was a NO-NO. But my instincts kicked in and I was decided to push for the look. Coupled by the facts my other friends went as Baywatch Hunks, so Jason was their muse, and some other friends went as Sailor Men, so I thought I could be their muse. We were in-theme!

Nuff said - here are the photos to tell you the story. Here I was as Candy, with a 1940's pin-up girl inspired make-up. I was really a girl: Lesson Learned #4: Pay-It-Forward - there has been an increasing number of people who we, apparently, inspired to dress-up. I want to share a deeper meaning to this yearly thing.

That's done for 2012! So you might be thinking what's in-store for 2013? Let's decide after the world decides not to end in 21 December 2012. But I assure you, if that is really bound to happen, you will see me in my fiercest, most glamourous yet. Stay tuned!

Bigfish presents Cream Halloween Ball 2012: Under The Sea featuring Sean Tyas and Simon Patterson

As Halloween approached, so did the pressure on what to wear for this year's Cream Halloween Ball. This is the event's 12th anniversary and the longest running Halloween costume party in the country. From the past two costumes I've donned - I do have a really big shoe to fill. 

Meanwhile, as exciting it is for the EDM community, a back-to-back special was arranged by Bigfish for its fans and loyal followers: Sean Tyas and Simon Patterson each and both on the decks for Cream! How cool can that get? 

This year's theme was underwater where me and my BFF Jason had a hard time figuring out a concept on what to wear. We even resorted to silly ones because it was really hard to out-do our 2011 costumes: The Black Swan and Wonder Woman. However, we came to a point we would just wear anything we feel sexy, confident, and fun in. So that's what we did. On my part, I did have a costume crisis. Last minute change of heart. I felt this when I fit my costume and it didn't feel right. Good thing our couturier is so good they can also do rush orders. And what I wore that night, was a great decision and a lesson to always rely on instincts. 

My outfit was inspired by Candy, the foxy sailorette from Christina Aguilera's Candyman music video and BFF Jason did a C.J. Parker (Pamela Anderson) as a Baywatch Blonde Babe.

Unlike last year, we were earlier than the usual to become a part of a media conference. This is a brief meet-and-greet and a chance for press, bloggers, and select few fans to ask the guest djs/producers questions. I got to do the ice breaker question, followed by a few more intriguing ones. Not mention, both Sean & Simon did like my costume but most importantly, had I not admitted I am a dude, they will never know.

I've always love the styles of both Si and Sean. They are more on the a deeper and darker side of trance which give them an edge from the so many dj/producers out there. I also follow the podcast of Sean Tyas called TYtanium Sessions. Si;s racy and edgy style is also mental - he could really drive to the edge in a very good way. Listening to both of them that night, there were times I could barely recognise who is on the decks. They both sound the same -- and by that I mean they both delivered mental tunes!!! Made me dance in my heels. Sean & Si did kill the night more than my 5-inch heels killed my feet. 

Back to the look of the costume, I was overwhelmed with the response of people. There were friends who kept asking to send photos as they were excited to see what we were wearing that night. Some kept calling to ask what's our costume like. It felt as if we were stars and people anxiously await what we have in store for them. This year, the make-up also levelled up. All thanks to our brilliant MUA Renan Bautista. He both made me and Jason to look like girls - he softened our features. I was a girl!! Some say I look like Iza Calzado, and many would comment I really did look like a 1940's pin-up girl.

This year's Cream is one for the books - I did enjoy both my costume and the music. This also a shout out to all the others who exerted effort to looking good and having fun this Halloween. Cheerio!

Bigfish presents SummerNRG featuring Aly & Fila and Ashley Wallbridge in Boracay 2012

Summer’s heat is officially upon us. This only means one thing:  BIGFISH Summer Energy will soon be making Boracay bounce!

I am so excited for Ashley Wallbridge! 

This year’s Summer Energy is Bigfish’s most exciting and ambitious one to date. It kicks off with the chilled-down Sunset Sessions on April 5 at the beachfront of Paraiso Bar in Station 2. Taking the energy up several notches is the Main Party happening on April 7, 8pm, also at the beachfront of Paraiso Bar, where revelers can sway until the summer sun rises. But the celebration doesn’t stop there—on April 8, from 6am onwards.

I ended my disco nap just in time to catch Ashley Wallbridge - not only he's a looker but he is a very promising Armada talent whose tune style appeals to my dance musical palette. So now in the party scene, I could hear girls shouting his name because now they have realised how cute he is. I was shouting with them - for the same reason, and because Ash was bringing down the island! He was banging! I didn't even realise how time flew so fast at that time that it was already Aly & Fila's turn.

It was my first time to experience this duo live. Apparently, only one of them can only man the decks as the other is deaf? Hailing from Cairo, Egypt, these fellas seemed to have something exotic to offer. As the night progressed, I thought it was coming on too slow, and low. It wasn't peaking as it should. And came 4AM, I thought they were already ending it. Not only until 5AM did the party start to peak up (or pick up) whatever you want to call it. Aly & Fila and Ashley Wallbridge did a back-to-back!!! Now that's something I have been waiting for. Being it a sunrise party, only the real 'ravers' would stay and dance to the beat - which is what happened. Oh, and during this time there was a tee tossed in to the crowd and managed to snatch it in exchange of getting spilled with my own drink. A Sound of Egypt tee from Aly & Fila.

And later that day (night) I saw Ashley Wallbridge on three different ocassions. Didn't have the balls to ask for a photo on the first two encounters. But on the third time, I thought it's a charm and a photo-op was in order. Thanks heaps to my friend Bhavish who did most of the job and all I had to do was pose. Voila!
