Movie Review: Dear John

Dear John is an endearing story between two young lovers who fell in love in a short time and was away from one another all the time. It also tackles relationship between parent, children and friends.

Based on Nicholas Sparks book, yes he is the same guy who gave us The Notebook, do expect to shed at least a few tears on this movie.

At first I didn't think it was from Nicholas Sparks but when I saw from the beginning credits, I psyched myself to be crying over this movie - and I did. Surprisingly, I did cry more though than I did on The Notebook.

Channing Tatum, that ever delish stud was quite fit for the role of John. Reserved and an introvert, with a bad boyish past engaging in street fights and tousles. Whilst Amanda Seyfried is this ravishing young woman, Savannah who caught John's heart in an instant.

There are a number of scenes in the movie that are touching and you aren't human at all if you didn't feel like crying or at least get teary-eyed by it.

Wasn't able to catch these in the movies earlier this year due to busy sched with work but I did see it courtesy of my good friend who copied me the file of the movie.

There was also a time when I mixed up Dear John with Letters to Juliet and called it Letters to John. Can't blame me though since both do involve letters and letter-writing.

I'd say this is a good stay-in movie. Watch it alone or with someone special for some good tear-jerk moment.

Movie Review: Inception

One word -- Brilliant! Inception is one of Leo's movies that I highly anticipated this quarter. I've always been a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio. Since the last movie of his that I watched, Shutter Island is another disturbing yet brilliant masterpiece with long-time collaboration director Martin Scorsese.

The cast are superbly exquisite from the likes of the talented Marion Cotilliard (Academy Award best actress for La Vien Rose), the then adorable Joseph Gordon-Levitt (10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer - boy he loves movies with numbers, doesn't he?), the ever witty Ellen Page (X3 as Kitty, Juno) and the devislishly delicious Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Red Eye) amongst others.

Leo's acting was very apt for the character. Although he is not the an ideal character actor, he's always fascinated me with the way he portray his roles. As for Ellen Page, though she doesn't really become the character I still like the way she does her craft and every time she does it I always see that Juno girl in her. I was a little weirded out seeing Cillian's character with no conviction, reserved and almost the victim contrary to his other roles in Batman Begins as Scarecrow and Red Eye as a disturbed villain wanting some revenge.

At first I thought the movie would be dragging - but it wasn't. The run time was more than two hours but towards the end of the movie, it didn't feel like you have been sitting on your ass for such a long time. That's an indication of a great movie. It was actually quite easy to keep up with the movie compared to how I imagined it. Not really a fan of movies where you need to think and analyse. The key to this one if just keeping track of the dream levels.

After watching the movie, my brain cells were stressed and decided to so something totally mindless with my friends. Headed to McDonald's for a late night dessert. And then that's the time we started to recap the scenes in the movies. I think that is the after effect of Inception -- there's this recall factor in it that you would want to talk about more after the movie and maybe perhaps consider watching it for a second time around.

Album Review: Madonna - Celebration (CD+DVD Audio/Video Collection)

In Celebration Madonna's milestones, achievements, music iconography and career longevity, she releases a her latest, most extensive collection of released singles and hits, accompanied by a DVD containing 95% of all the videos she has released. Madonna's video back catalog is indeed impressive and only proves that Madonna is a unique artists who launched a revolution in pop music and culture sometime 25+ years ago. The album art says a lot about Madonna with one bottom line - she's a rare gem in the music industry and what she has done and achieved will always be used as benchmark for the next generation of performers. She is a true living legend and I'm so glad to have lived in a Madonna era.

The title track is the carrier single of the compilation which pays homage to Madonna impressive dance-oriented hits such as Vogue, Deeper and Deeper to the latter ones like Hung Up. She made a wise choice in doing a collab with Paul Oakenfold for this track. Though the video version used the Benassi mix for a more club-themed feel. Personally I like both versions but I like the Benassi mix better because of it electro rich sound. The Benassi mix sounds very Euro-electro no wonder the song is a much bigger hit in other parts of the world compared to US.

14. Hollywood
15. Die Another Day
16. Don't Tell Me

19. So Cool

This video compilation is her most extensive to date. Although it may look like this 2-DVD disc collection has all Madonna video's released including the MTV-banned videos Erotica and Justify My love, it does not contain all Madonna videos made and released. Nonetheless, I am happy with this collection. Imagine all her rarely seen videos like True Blue, Bedtime Story and the latter videos from Music to Hard Candy era. Notice that this is her third official video compilation. If you check on the first two - Immaculate Collection: The Videos and Madonna 93:99 Video Collection, there are videos there not included on Celebration: The Video Collection. MVs like Bad Girl, Crazy For You, Fever, Nothing Really Matters, You'll See, etc. Madonna's label was wise enough not to include all videos in order for one to secure all three video collections -- just like me.

Official Video: Janet Jackson - Make Me

With the release of Janet's 2nd greatest hits compilation, Number Ones (a.k.a. The Best) comes a new single that sounds like a mash-up of her #1 hit All For You and her brother's 1979 hit Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough. Although Janet has denied the song was made as a tribute to the song or her late brother Michael. The video was critically acclaimed for it's black and white theme transcending Janet back to her glory old days when she was one of the artists to popularise B&W videos (Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, Control, etc.) Comparisons to newer generations has been drawn, most of it was with Beyoncé's Single Ladies.

I happen to like the music video as it gives that Hype Williams feel with a whole lot of Janet-bopping beats and grooves. The video was directed by Robert Hales.

Make Me peaked on the Billboard Dance chart giving Ms. J a total of 19 #1 Billboard Dance hits under her Hermés belt.

Hope you enjoyed the video and feel free to share your thoughts--

Album Review: Janet Jackson - Number Ones (a.k.a. The Best)

This entry has been made before on another platform and I just felt it's only right that another entry should be made on this blog. Never too late!

Janet Jackson's career has been a phenomenon! With her release of a second "Greatest Hits" compilation is a real treat to her long-time fans such as myself.

Number Ones contain 33 of Janet's #1 hits across the global charts, from billboard to UK to Oricon JP. With the release of this compilation comes a new single Make Me which topped the Billboard Dance Charts making Janet to have a total of 19 #1 hits on the Billboard dance charts. Her back catalog looks impressive from the mid 80s to mid 90s, Janet is one of the key artists to redefine pop music and culture.

This compilation includes an extensive chronological catalog of Ms. Janet from What Have You Done For Me Lately (Control) to her latest Make Me. It shows how she progressed and has become successful as an artist -- from the socially conscious Rhythm Nation to a sexually-themed and self-decalred independence janet. (pronounced as Janet period) to self-discovery The Velvet Rope towards being a true music icon. The downside of this arrangement is that you can show the peak and decline of Janet's career. She has been experiencing declining sales since her album Damita Jo. Though made a good come back album Discipline, wasn't enough to skyrocket her back to the top. However, despite this, Janet will remain one of the few music icons of my generation who has not only helped mould my childhood but helped the future generation in terms of music trend.

08. Miss You Much
09. Rhythm Nation
10 Escapade
11. Alright
12. Come Back To Me
13. Black Cat
14. Love Will Never Do (Without You)
15. The Best Things In Life Are Free
16. That's The Way Love Goes
17. When I Think Of You (Morales House Mix UK 7") [UK/Int'l Ed bonus]

Disc 2:

01. If

Live Performance: Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers/Get Outta My Way (Hey Hey It's Saturday)

Kylie's performances on Hey Hey It's Saturday is one of the most anticipated moments on the Aussie television. It marks her first performance on Aussie national telly after a very long time. We know how excited Kylie gets every time she goes home to her native Australia and the fact that she's there to promote her latest treat, she's also doing some family time and visit her nephew, Ethan -- Dannii and Kris' newborn baby.

Back on the show, Kylie performed her global smash hit All The Lovers with the usual wedding-cake layered platform donning a similar ensemble that she wore during the M6 Music Awards in France but with a shortened front revealing her left thighs and her forthcoming single Get Outta My Way due out in September.

Since this wasn't done in UK or anywhere in EU, it was a business decision to bring in new local dancers. Not trying to discriminate or anything but I believe her Brit dancers were better in terms of choreography. Perhaps, they have done it more than the newbie Aussies? I don't know. Just my 2 cents worth. I also don't get what she was wearing for this number -- probably trying to capture that modern sexy Aphrodite look. But it's Kylie, she's still fabulous and Get Outta My Way's choreo just made me like the song even more.

All The Lovers

Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers (Sat.1 German Television Station ID - Colour Your Life campaign)

Sat.1, a German TV station launched the Colour Your Life campaign as their station ID where it features the divine Kylie Minogue in a pyschedelic make-over of her first single off the Aphrodite album. The lights, the visuals, the thigh-high Swarovski-studded boots and Kylie herself were just so inviting and convincing as she utter the words -- colour your life.

Enjoy!

Live Performance: Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers/Get Outta My Way (Alan Carr Chatty Man)

One of the most anticipated guestings and live perfomances of Kylie on British television -- Alan Carr Chatty Man.

She had an interview with Alan which turned out to be one of the most hilarious Kylie interviews I have seen and she performed her current global smash hit All The Lovers which is the first single of her 11th studio album and later on performed Get Outta My Way which is the forthcoming second single from the same album due out in September.

All The Lovers

Donning a sexy and very revealing outfit -- Kylie nails another live performance of All The Lovers on Chatty Man. Underneath of what a seemingly deconstructed crimson red ensemble is a glittery short dress/lingerie revealing Kylie's flawless legs and her toned flat tummy. She had the usual wedding-cake platform to recreate the flash mob scene in the video.

Get Outta My Way

Although this is like the 3rd time Kylie performed this live, I feel that this is the best performance yet. With all the dancing she did -- I got so perked up seeing Kylie grooving on her own song. I have never seen her dance like this in quite a long time. To cap the night show, she performs this forthcoming single wearing a basic black cocktail dress with some really very interesting accessories on her neck.

Movie Review: Dorian Gray (2009)

This modern adaptation of an Oscar Wilde novel sure will whirl you into a world of vanity and hedonism. Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian [Narnia], Dunstan [Stardust]) is a perfect epitomy of the character.

I first watched this movie when I was on business trip in Bangkok, February 2010. After my meeting, which ended early, I decided to wait around for my colleagues instead of heading back to the hotel as the travel on the road would have only eaten up my time knowing the traffic jam situation in Bangkok. So I decided to watch a movie and sleep inside. I selected the movie based on the time that will commence screening ASAP. It happened to be Dorian Gray. Paid my tix, thought that the main cast is cute so I was, like, what the hell -- I'm just gonna sleep anyway. I did sleep really soundly.

Months later, my friend and I traded some downloaded movies and saw Dorian Gray and copied it onto my lappie. I decided to watch the movie since I got some extra time. I ended up liking the movie and was surprise to the twists that were not really present on the original plot.

Dorian Gray is believed to be one of the most graced face that ever-lived. With actors who portrayed the role: Helmut Berger (Dorian Gray 1970); Stuart Townsend (League of Extraordinary Gentlement); Ben Barnes (Dorian Gray 2009), these men were the finest looking and fit for role.

Take a step in to the world of vanity, hedonism, love, friendship and betrayal. The gay twist, the opium -- hedonism at its finest. This movie is worth your penny. I regret not watching it the first time I had the chance to.

Would love to know your 2 cents on the movie --

Movie Review: Sex and the City 2

Watched Sex and the City 2 with my friends on 05 June 2010. Finally after the heavy anticipation of the movie to be shown on 27 May, to finally finding out it will have been shown in Manila by 02 June 2010, we decided to book a good date when everyone in our group is available to watch it with us. Some of us even had some private screening invites, advance screening invites but had to refuse the offer as we all wanted to watch it together as a group. It's a great movie to watch with your friends and that's what we did!

With the first movie disappointed the critics and still pleased the fans, the second one has the same scenario. The first movie was better but the sequel had a lot of fun parts in it and a few highlights that gives them quite the upper-hand against the first movie. First was Miranda's transformation in terms of character's involvement on the plot (the first movie I feel like her character took a backstage) and her wardrobe's style was through the roof! Among the 4 girls, Miranda is my favourite as I also could see most of me in her.

The movie felt like a stretched out episode that at some point it feels really dragging and then it kind of ends in a snap!

Overall, my movie experience is the best because I was in the company of some of the greatest people in my life -- my friends.

Live Performance: Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers/Can't Get You Out Of My Head (M6 Music Live Concert, France)

Kylie performs All The Lovers and Can't Get You Out Of My Head at the M6 Music Live Concert in France on 19 June 2010. She dons another Blue Aphrodite-inspired dress with a double slit all the way through the waist revealing her luscious legs and bum-bum. We all know that Kylie sings live. Her voice on this performance may seem to be off-key but I realised that was due to the effect of the open area. I've seen her live and trust me, she puts more life to the songs when she sings it live.

Enjoy the vid.

PS: I like how she sounded when she sang a bit of the Can't Get You Out Of My Head chorus.
